Trinity Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Williams to Advance to NESCAC Semifinals

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore Abby McInerney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) broke a 3-3 tie with 12:06 to play in the first half and the top-seeded Bantams did not look back from there as they outscored the No. 8 seeded Williams College Ephs, 14-1, from that point on to cruise to an 18-4 victory on Saturday in the Women's Lacrosse New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Quarterfinals matchup in Hartford. Trinity moves to 14-2 overall while Williams ends its season with a 5-11 record.

McInerney scored three times on the afternoon while senior co-captain Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.) and sophomore Allie Barrett (Concord, Mass.) led the charge with four goals each. Griffin added two assists as did sophomore Georgia Mergner (West Caldwell, N.J.) while sophomore Clare Lyne (Concord, Mass.) won eight draw controls to lead all players. The Trinity defense, led by senior co-captain Ashley Stewart (Dover, Mass.) who had four caused turnovers to go along with three ground balls, forced 21 Eph turnovers on the afternoon. Williams senior Alyssa Maddalone (Newtown, Pa.) scored twice for the Ephs who were outshot, 31-11, by the Bantams.

Griffin struck first for Trinity at the 25:02 mark in the first half, followed by a Williams goal from Maddalone sandwiched between two of McInerney's three scores to give Trinity an early 3-1 advantage. The Ephs tied things at three with back-to-back goals by junior Jenna Chodos (Wilmington, Del.) and senior Anne Rehfuss (Latham, N.Y.) before the Bantams proceeded to dominate the remainder of the game. McInerney broke the tie with 12:06 to play in the half to precede scores by sophomore Kiley Coffey (West Newbury, Mass.), Griffin, junior Karly Simpson (South Hadley, Mass.) to give Trinity a 7-3 lead. Barrett beat Williams starting goalie Margaret Draper (Belmont, Mass.) twice in the last minute of the half to push the Trinity advantage to six as the teams entered the intermission.

Trinity scored six unanswered goals out of the half to take a dominating 15-3 lead before Maddalone's second goal of the game on a free-position attempt ended the scoring drought at the 15:28 mark. During the Bantam run, Lyne scored once, Simpson and Coffey each tallied their second goals of the game, Griffin found the back of the net twice, and Barrett scored on an assist from junior Nicole Stauffer (Cheshire, Conn.). Lyne and Barrett both scored once more with under ten minutes to play while freshman Jennifer Cook (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored her second career goal on an assist from Griffin to cap off the 18-goal performance by Trinity.

With the win, the Bantams will play host for the remainder of the NESCAC Championship Tournament next weekend. Trinity moves on to face the No. 5 seeded Bates Bobcats while No. 2 seed Middlebury will play No. 3 seed Amherst in the other semifinal matchup.
