Box Score Waterville, Maine - Despite working a 40-23 shooting edge for the evening, the Trinity College Bantams lost, 3-1, to the Colby College Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's hockey action on Friday night at Alfond Rink in Waterville, Maine. The Bantams, ranked No. 11 in the country, fall to 8-4-1 overall and 4-3-0 in league play while Colby improves to 6-4-1 on the year and 5-3-1 in NESCAC action.
Of the four total goals scored, not a single one came at even-strength action. Two-of-three Mule goals, including the game winner in the second period, came with Colby down a man due to penalty. The other two came in the form of power play goals, one by each team. Colby goaltender Sean Lawrence (Granite Bay, Calif.) made 39 saves in his season debut between the pipes while Trinity junior goalie Alex Morin (St. Hubert, Quebec) finished with 20 saves.
The Mules went up 1-0 at 10:42 of the opening period when senior Jack Burton (Baltimore, Md.) potted his third of the season on the power play. Devin Albert (Reading, Mass.) had his shot saved by Morin, however, the rebound went right to Burton on the right side of the post who gobbled it up and dumped it into the back of the net.
Colby extended its lead to 2-0 less than five minutes into the second frame when Lawrence turned aside a Bantam shot that was sent up ice to Nick O'Connor (Canton, Mass.) who broke up the left side and skated in towards goal before beating Morin to the five-hole.
The Mules made it 3-0 on Kevin Doherty's (Wakefield, Mass.) shorthanded goal at 7:48 of the third period. Morin tried to clear the puck off the boards, but the puck went directly to Colby's EJ Rauseo (Methuen, Mass.). With two defenders coming toward him, Rauseo found Doherty all alone in front of the net for the score. The Bantams broke the shutout at the 10:41 mark of the third period on Anthony Sabitsky's (Sicklerville, N.J.) team-high tenth goal of the season. The Mules were on in the power play, however, a pass back to the point was poked away by Trinity senior captain Samuel Johnson (Dallas, Texas) to Sabitsky, who raced past the benches and ripped a shot for the goal.
Trinity returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Bowdoin for a 4 p.m. game.
