Box Score Brunswick, Maine - The Bowdoin College Polar Bears scored three times in the opening period and never looked back as they won, 5-1, against the Trinity College Bantams on Saturday afternoon in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's hockey action in Brunswick. The loss drops No. 11 ranked Trinity to 8-5-1 overall and 4-4 in league play while Bowdoin improves to 7-8 on the year and 4-6 in the conference.
Bowdoin took the early lead 2:35 into the game off a second effort shot by Matthew Melanson (Wakefield, Mass.). Melanson made his initial bid on net from the right dot, with the puck bouncing back into play off Trinity junior goalie Alex Morin (St. Hubert, Quebec) before he followed his own shot and cleaned up the rebound at the far post. Bowdoin opened up a 2-0 lead just 7:42 into the period when Austin Ricci (Windham, N.H.) received a pass from Cody Todesco (Franklin, Mass.) and beat Morin with a wrist shot from the inside edge of the left circle. John-Alexander Kourkoulis (Saint-Laurent, Quebec) potted the third Polar Bear goal of the period minutes later courtesy of a misplayed puck by Trinity's defense.
Trinity chipped into the deficit 6:50 into the second period when senior captain Sean Orlando (Ivyland, Pa.) cleaned up a rebound off a shot by junior Tyler Whitney (Wakefield, Mass.) and buried the puck into the back of the net. Todesco answered for Bowdoin with 1:02 remaining in the period, however, to reclaim the three-goal lead.
The only goal of the final period came on an empty-netter by Matthew Lison (Venetia, Pa.) who dumped the puck into the back of the net from near center ice to seal the 5-1 victory.
Trinity returns to action next Friday night against Tufts, home at the Koeppel Center.
