Box Score Hartford, Conn. – A pair of goals just 21 seconds apart in the third period proved to be the difference as the Trinity College women's hockey team came back to defeat the Hamilton Continentals, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in Hartford. Trinity improves to 2-8-1 overall with the win and 1-5-1 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play while Hamilton falls to 8-4-0 on the year and 4-2-0 in conference action.
Hamilton struck first just 5:14 into the first period to take an early 1-0 lead. A shot by senior captain Sara Taffe (Maple Grove, Minn.) was brushed aside by Trinity junior goalie Sydney Belinskas (Port Orange, Fla.) but landed at the feet of Sarah Fisher (Northbrook, Ill.) who pushed a pass behind the net to Megan Ahern (Oswego, N.Y.) who wrapped the puck around the far-side post snuck it past Belinskas' shin pad for the goal. The Bantams had an answer though, with 8:32 to play in the period. After a flurry of Bantam shots, saved by Hamilton junior goaltender Sam Walther (Gambrills, Md.), senior captain Kate Fraley (Edina, Minn.) pushed a loose puck underneath Walther and into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
The Bantams had a pair of good looks at goals early in the second period but Hamilton's blue line held strong to keep Trinity off the scoreboard. The Continentals broke the tie at the 13:30 mark when an errant Bantam pass was picked off by Ahern just as Hamilton finished a penalty kill which led to a breakaway. Ahern shoveled the puck to senior Katie Parkman (Stratford, Prince Edward Island) who was all alone as she left the penalty box. Parkman took the puck into Trinity's defensive zone and deked Belinskas before flipping a back-hand into net to give Hamilton the 2-1 lead.
Trinity almost tied it six minutes into the final frame when a shot by junior Melissa Maffeo (Melrose, Mass.) knuckled under the blocker of Walther, however the puck hit the piping and bounced into the corner without incident. Maffeo had another chance soon thereafter which she made good on to tie the game at two. Junior Hannah Oganeku (Castle Pines, Colo.) led a 2-on-1 with Maffeo trailing and fired a shot which was turned aside by Walther. The puck bounced to Maffeo in front of the net and, with Walther out of position due to the initial save, Maffeo potted the rebound to even the game. The Bantams went ahead, 3-2, just 21 seconds later when sophomore forward Chandler Solimine (Pelham, N.Y.) fired a shot off a faceoff in Hamilton's zone that beat Walther. Needing an equalizer, Hamilton pulled Walther from net with 1:13 left to gain an extra attacker just before the Bantams were whistled for a tripping penalty. Hamilton threw everything it had at Trinity's defense but the Bantam penalty kill unit held tough in front of a pair of saves by Belinskas as Trinity came away with the victory.
The Bantams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Manhattanville for a 7 p.m. game.
