Trinity Men's Ice Hockey Blasts Tufts

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – Senior forward Ethan Holdaway (Glastonbury, Conn.) had two goals and one assist to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 7-1 victory over the visiting Tufts University Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey action this evening at Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports Center.  Trinity improves to 9-5-1 overall and 5-4 in the NESCAC while snapping a two-game losing skid and avenging its season-opening loss to the Jumbos in Medford in November.  Tufts falls to 7-5-3 overall and 5-3-1 in the league.

Trinity scored twice in the first four minutes and three times in the first period, as senior defenseman Sam Johnson (Plano, Texas) assisted on all three tallies.  Johnson started the play on the game's opening goal, getting the puck ahead to Holdaway who pushed it up to junior forward Tyler Whitney (Wakefield, Mass.).  Whitney got past the Jumbo defense and had his first bid stopped by Tufts senior goalie Mason Pulde (Lexington, Mass.) before punching in the rebound 3:45 into the contest.  Junior forward Anthony Sabitsky (Sicklerville, N.J.) netted what proved to be the game-winner just 10 seconds later from Johnson and senior forward Ryan Cole (Anchorage, Alaska), and Holdaway beat Pulde with 7:45 left in the opening stanza from Johnson and senior forward Sean Orlando (Ivyland, Pa.).  Trinity junior goalie Alex Morin (St. Hubert, Quebec) stopped the visitors from getting on the board with a one-on-one stop against Jumbo senior forward Mike Leary (Wakefield, Mass.) with close to four minutes on the clock.

Cole scored 5:04 into the second period on a wrist shot from the right wing after Sabitsky played the puck to him on a faceoff, and Holdaway made it 5-0 with a short-handed goal with a steal from the Tufts defenseman and a nifty move against Jumbo junior backstop Nik Nugnes (West Barnstable, Mass.) midway through the second frame.  Trinity scored twice more in the third period on goals by Orlando and senior captain Will Sleeper (Wellesley, Mass.), before Tufts freshman forward Anthony Farinacci (Chatham, N.J.) rounded out the scoring with a power-play goal inside the final two minutes.

Trinity finished with a 41-to-28 shooting edge, the teams combined for 30 penalty minutes, and each squad scored once on a combined 11 power plays.  Sabitsky gave Trinity three three-point scorers on a goal and two assists, while Cole, Orlando, and Whitney added a goal and an assist apiece. Morin finished with 27 saves, while three Jumbo netminders totaled 34 stops among them.  Trinity hosts Connecticut College at 4 p.m. tomorrow and Tufts visits Wesleyan at 3 p.m.
