Trinity Volleyball's Winning Streak Ends With Loss to Keene St.

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - The Trinity College volleyball team fell to Keene St. in straight sets at home on Thursday night, its first loss in four matches. The Bantams fall to 3-2 on the year while the Owls remain perfect, improving to 8-0 to start the fall. Trinity returns to action on Saturday for a 2 p.m. New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) matchup at home against the Middlebury Panthers while Keene St. next plays at Eastern Connecticut over the weekend in a tournament with the Warriors and Salve Regina.

Keene St. senior Rachel Lamica (Malone, N.Y.) entered the history books for the Owls, surpassing 1,000-career kills early in the second set. She finished the match with a game-high 19 kills and .486 hitting percentage to go along with 11 digs. Junior Niamh Dodd (Mahopac, N.Y.) joined Lamica with double-digit kills, finishing with 10, while first-year Bailey Wilson (Moorpark, Calif.) led all players with 37 assists.

For Trinity, sophomore Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) and junior co-captain Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.) led the offense with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Underwood, senior co-captain Claudia Varner (Port Washington, N.Y.) and rookie Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) each tallied a pair of aces and first-year Ali Odermann (Lenexa, Kansas) finished with a team-high 14 digs.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair until Keene St. went on a 4-0 run to open up an 18-14 lead. Back-to-back kills from Underwood ignited a 3-0 run by the Bantams to cut the deficit to 19-18, but the Owls eventually prevailed, clinching the set on a kill by Lamica to win, 25-22.

Set two came down to the wire as well with Keene St. winning by a score of 29-27. The Bantams claimed a 16-12 lead after an ace from Varner but the Owls stayed within striking distance. Trinity went up 24-22 on an attack error by the visitors but two quick points by the Owls tied things back at 24. The Bantams went up 27-26 thanks to a kill by sophomore Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) but the Owls finished the set on a 3-0 run, finishing it with a kill from Lamica followed by an attack error by the Bantams.

The Owls ran away with the third set after taking an early, 9-3 lead. Five-straight points made it a 15-5 lead for Keene St. as they eventually won the set, 25-15 on a boomer from Dodd.
