Box Score Hartford, Conn. - The Trinity College Bantams fell, 3-0, to the Amherst College Mammoths on Friday evening in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) volleyball action at Oosting Gymnasium in Hartford. The loss drops Trinity to 3-4 on the year and 0-2 in conference action while Amherst improves to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Bantams return to the court tomorrow for a pair of games, against Maine-Maritime at 10 a.m. and Mt. St. Mary at 2 p.m.
Amherst was paced by Emily Kolsky (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Cameron Hendricks (Glastonbury, Conn.), who eached finished the night with 11 kills. Adelaide Shunk (Corte Madera, Calif.) and Charlotte Duran (Newport Beach, Calif.) combined for 31 assists at the setter position while Marialexa Natsis (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished with a game-high 5 blocks at the middle hitter position.
The Bantams were led by junior Hanna Engstrom (Hopkinton, Mass.) who led the squad with eight kills while rookie Rebecca Chu (Old Tappan, N.J.) notched a game-high 27 assists to go along with 13 digs.
The Mammoths jumped out to a 14-10 lead in the first set before ripping off a quick 4-0 run to take an eight-point advantage. A kill from Trinity sophomore Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) ended the run but Amherst came back with another four-straight points to take a commanding 22-11 lead. Trinity tried to get something going with a 3-0 run courtesy of a kill from Engstrom sandwiched between a pair of kills by sophomore Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.), but Amherst held on for the 25-15 set win, capped off with a kill by Hendricks.
Set two saw the Bantams jump out to a 16-12 lead, forcing the Mammoths to call a timeout to slow Trinity's momentum. With the Bantams up 19-15, Amherst went on a 6-0 run to take a 21-19 lead. A kill by Engstrom followed by an Amherst hitting error tied the game at 21-21, but the visitors finished with four-straight points, once again capped off by a kill from Hendricks, to take the set and a 2-0 match lead.
Amherst cruised in the third set, turning a 10-5 lead into a 20-13 one. After a kill from junior co-captain Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.) made it 21-14 in favor of the Mammoths, Amherst closed out the set on a 4-1 run to come away with the match victory.
