Box Score Danbury, Conn. - Despite dropping the first set, 25-17, the Trinity College volleyball team came back to take the next three and pick up a 3-1 victory over the Western Connecticut State Colonials on Tuesday night in Danbury. The win is Trinity's fourth in a row as it moves to 4-1 on the year. WCSU falls to 4-5 overall with the loss. The Bantams return to the court on Friday for a 7 p.m. match at Southern Vermont before opening New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play on Saturday at Middlebury.
After tallying just eight kills with eight attack errors in the first set, The Bantams went on to roll the rest of the way, picking up set wins of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-17. Senior co-captain Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.) tied a game-high with 13 kills to go along with 16 digs and a pair of aces. Sophomore Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) continued her strong play at the setter position, leading all players with 33 assists and added 12 digs. Fellow sophomore Ali Odermann (Lenexa, Kan.) finished with a game high 24 digs while classmate Becky Chu (Old Tappan, N.J.) and rookie Natalia Ortiz (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) each tallied double-digit digs as well.
The Colonials were paced by senior libero Jenna Pisano (Orange, Conn.) who tallied a match-high 25 digs, while classmate setter Jenna Skerritt (Wolcott, Conn.) notched a team-high 32 assists. Senior Kamari King (East Hartford, CT) led the hosts offensively with 13 kills.
WCSU jumped out to an 11-8 lead in the first set before going on an 8-1 run to take a commanding 19-9 advantage. The Colonials clinched the first set soon after but the Bantams bounced back in the second set. Trinity scored the first five points of the second set before WCSU came back with a 5-0 run of its own to tie things. However, the visitors eventually found themselves ahead, 20-11, after a kill by senior co-captain Hanna Engstrom (Hopkinton, Mass.), before eventually clinching the set, 25-16. The Bantams won the third set by the same scored before Engstrom and junior Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) came up with a block for the 25th point in the fourth set to seal the victory.
