Flaherty Nets Game-Winner With Five Seconds Left as Women's Hockey Beats Bowdoin

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - With five seconds remaining in a 2-2 game, first-year Caelin Flaherty (Upton, Mass.) picked up the puck near mid-ice, raced towards net and scored the game-winning goal for the Trinity College women's hockey team in a 3-2 victory over Bowdoin College. The Bantams finish the regular season with a 11-10-3 overall record and 8–5-3 mark in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and lock up the No. 4 seed and a quarterfinals home game in next weekend's conference championship tournament.

Bowdoin jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a pair of first period strikes. The first came just 1:56 into the game after the Bantams were whistled for a penalty that gave the Polar Bears a skater advantage. Bowdoin took advantage when Tala Glass (Glencoe, Ill.) found the back of the net off an assist from Izzi Stoddard (Concord, N.H.). The visitors added to their lead on a first period buzzer-beater as Katie Leininger (Newtown, Pa.) potted her fourth goal of the season with just 0.04 seconds remaining.

Trinity chipped away at the deficit and ended the shutout at the 14:53 mark in the second period. Sophomore Sierra Lee (Ferguson's Cove, Nova Scotia) fired a shot that bounced off the leg pad of Bowdoin goalie Kerri St. Denis (Harpswell, Maine) fell at the skates of rookie Katie Marsden (Hessle, England). Marsden cleaned up the rebound and put the puck into the back of the net to make it a 2-1 game, a score which stood after two periods.

The Bantams saved the fireworks for the final period, scoring twice to come away with the win. Rookie Angelica Mushenko (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored for the second time in as many games off assists from classmate Ellie Fellows (Westport, Mass.) and Julia Lee (Ferguson's Cove, Nova Scotia). The goal came just 1:22 into the final period of regulation before a drought of over 18 minutes made the game look destined for overtime.

That was, until Flaherty came away with a loose puck in the neutral zone and flew down ice with only St. Denis to beat. Flaherty deked left, pulled the puck across the front of the crease and stuffed it between St. Denis' leg and the pipe as the Koeppel Center erupted. The ensuing faceoff was won by Bowdoin which led to a final desperation shot by Ali Douglas (Springfield, Mass.), but junior netminder Kai-Lilly Karpman (Playa Del Ray, Calif.) came up with the glove save as the final horn sounded and Trinity completed the series sweep.
